Worldwide smartphone market by OS in 2009.

worldwide smartphone market by os in 2009

Palm’s webOS managed to eke out a small 0.7 percent share among smartphones in its first year on the market, but that’s not as good as Bank of America/Merrill Lynch analyst Vivek Arya would have liked. “Palm’s superior platform features have not translated into sufficient carrier support and consumer demand,” he wrote in a note to investors, “and we are concerned the window of opportunity may be closing as Google’s Android ecosystem gains ground, RIM revitalizes its portfolio, iPhone increases its presence, and as Microsoft reboots its efforts with Windows Phone 7.”

Worlwide mobile market by manufacturer in 2009

worldwide mobile market by manufacturer in 2009

Smartphones—essentially pocket computers that on occasion are used to make phone calls—sold 33 million more units in 2009 over 2008. “In 2009, smartphone-focused vendors like Apple and Research In Motion successfully captured market share from other larger device producers, controlling 14.4 and 19.9 per cent of the worldwide smartphone market, respectively,” said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi in a statement. iPhone and Android biggest winners in mobile market in 2009

iphone winners

Though the overall mobile market is slowing—sales are down about one percent for 2009 year-over-year—a slight fourth quarter sales jump balanced the dips during the rest of the year. The good news is all in smartphones, as sales were up a whopping 41.1 percent for the fourth quarter and 23.8 percent overall, according to the latest data from market research firm Gartner. Nokia still commands large but declining chunks of smartphone and overall mobile phone sales, while iPhone and Android devices saw big leaps last year. Read the rest of this entry »

iPhone particularly popular among the young and the old

The iPhone is twice as popular as comparable smartphones among young’uns and older folks. This from a survey conducted by the analysts at mobile advertising firm AdMob, who polled a total of 963 iPhone, Android OS, webOS, and iPod touch users on their demographics and usage patterns. The survey was part of an opt-in initiative sent to users on their mobile devices.
According to the statistics, 14 percent of those on the iPhone were 55 or older, while only eight percent of Android users and seven percent of webOS were in the same age group. Similarly, iPhone users under the age of 17 made up for 13 percent of the sample, while Android and webOS users of the same age made up for less than 10 percent combined. Apple could do especially well if its young iPod touch demographic (65 percent of all iPod touch users were under 17) eventually upgrades to the iPhone, too. Read the rest of this entry »

Apple files alt iPhone input, physical “key” login patents

Two recently published patent applications from Apple caught our attention for their craftiness. One shows how to use the iPhone’s camera as an alternate gesture input method; the other details a system using a uniquely shaped signet to log in to a computer.
The first patent, “Camera as Input Interface,” adds alternate input methods for a touchscreen phone, particularly useful when the touchscreen is pressed against your face during a phone call. The patent describes a method using the built-in camera as a gesture detector, recognizing “swiping” up, down, left, or right using a finger. The gestures could be used to control voicemail, for instance, by swiping “forward” or “back” to skip to the next or previous message. The input could be augmented with accelerometer data to recognize a “tap” as well, according to the patent application. Read the rest of this entry »

Wireless Carriers Tell FCC They Play Fair

The four major U.S. carriers, as well as Google, are telling federal regulators that they give consumers adequate notice about early termination fees, insisting that the charges they place for breaking a contract are a necessary to recoup the cost of high-end devices.

“Customers clearly understand that they have choices,” said Robert Quinn, an AT&T senior vice president. “While the vast majority of subscribers choose term commitments and discounted or free handsets, AT&T has millions of month-to-month and prepaid subscribers.” Read the rest of this entry »

FCC Wants TV Airwaves for Wireless Broadband

Federal regulators are hoping to get more wireless spectrum for advanced mobile services by offering to pay television broadcasters — including NBC, CBS, Fox and ABC — to give up their rights to airwaves worth an estimated $50 billion.
As part of a proposal, called the “National Broadband Plan,” existing spectrum holders would be paid to give up their licenses for government auctions, in addition to receiving a portion of the airwave proceeds raised by selling the to rights wireless carriers. Read the rest of this entry »

T-Mobile Adds Prepaid Customers, Looks to 4G for Turnaround

The Bellevue, Wash.-based carrier said it signed 488,000 prepaid customers, but lost 117,000 more-valuable contract users, for a total of 33.8 million year-end subscribers — a major concern as postpaid consumers increasingly turn to rivals who offer more robust data services for smartphones.
