How to change and assign ringtones on Android phone

Your Android phone can do some amazing next-gen tricks. But making calls is the bread and butter of all mobiles and Android handsets are no different.
But Google has baked in some awesome tweaks which make changing and assigning ringtones easier than ever. Read on to find out how to make your Android handset sing sweeter…
Changing your ringtone
This couldn’t be easier. Jump into the settings menu, hit sound and display settings and tap phone ringtone to get a drop down menu of all the ones available on your Android phone, from Loopy Lounge to Steppin’ Out.
Use an MP3 as a ringtone
To do this, choose music in the main Android menu. Go to the songs tab, scroll down and pick your tune and hold your finger down on it. You’ll then get a pop up menu with “Use as phone ringtone” as an option. Hit this and you’re done.
Install Rings Extended
This app doesn’t appear in your apps folder, but becomes an integral part of the Android OS instead, making it more powerful when it comes to assigning ringtones. To get it search for Rings Extended in Android Market and hit install. It’s free.
Once it’s downloaded it provides a one-stop shop for changing MP3 and regular ringtones. Just go to phone ringtones in the sound and display menu and your Android phone will offer you the chance to use Rings Extended. There you’ll see options to use MP3s or regular ringtones, as well as seeing what your current ringtone is.
Select contact to assign specific ringtones
Assigning a specific ringtone to a specific contact takes a few steps in Android. To do so, go into your contacts, choose the person you want and press the menu hard key at the bottom of the device (second from left on the Google Nexus One). Then hit options. In this menu you’ll see the ringtone appears as default. Tap this and you’ll be able to choose MP3s and other ringtones.
