Acer Iconia lovers were waiting eagerly for an up gradation in the OS of their favorite tab. Finally, their wishes have been granted and the tab is soon going to receive Android Honeycomb 3.1 upgrade in the month of July. Well, this is not a rumor as one of the spokesperson of Acer India has confirmed it stating that they would be releasing the upgrade during the end of July.

Actually, the brand was initially finding it difficult to do so because over the air upgrades were not available in India; this is because many of the service providers disapprove this. For all those who don’t know what Over the Air upgrade is, here is an explanation- this technology allows a particular device to get updates directly from the service providers without any help of WiFi connectivity.

The new version of Honeycomb 3.1 will give standard enhancements to the original one. It will include an USB port that will support USB 2 plug devices like mouse, keyboards and also game console controllers.

Acer announced its new range of smartphones to great fanfare earlier in the year, and now presents the Tempo M900 and the phone makes quite an impression. The M900 is one of the largest and heaviest smartphones ever released, at 62×119 mm, weighing a colossal 188g and measuring 19mm at its thickest point, it’s not quite built for portability.
The screen, for instance, is impressively large, at 3.8in in diagonal and has a 480 x 800 resolution, though sensitivity and brightness are lacking. It also possesses a full QWERTY keyboard.
The M900 also boasts a fingerprint reader, which allows the phone to be locked and unlocked with a simple finger-swipe, and also offers five-way (up, down, left, right and select) touch-sensitive navigation.
The M900 has everything a top end smartphone should have. It has HSDPA for super-fast data downloads and browsing, it has an FM Radio, plus an accelerometer that switches the screen orientation around automatically and a five-megapixel camera on the rear with an LED flash. The phone’s 1,530mAh capacity lithium polymer battery provides two days, 19hrs 25mins of battery life.
However, the M900 has dreadful problems with usability. The unresponsive touchscreen, difficult keyboard, a fingerprint reader that doesn’t work in bright light, a horrible desktop design and dimensions that make it the ideal phone for Yao Ming, combine to make the M900 an awkward phone that’s difficult to use.
On the whole, the M900 has some promising features, but it’s highly impractical and cumbersome to use and doesn’t do justice to its price tag.

Since entering the smartphone market after its purchase of E-TEN, Acer has come up with some astonishingly cheap handsets. Last year it offered the bargain basement E101, which ran Windows Phone, and this year it’s trying to pull off much the same trick with the E110, except this new model runs the more popular Android operating system. You can pick up the phone SIM free online for just £150, which is an incredibly low asking price for an Android device. However, cheap doesn’t always mean cheerful, so the question is does the E110 really represent good value for money?

Obviously designing a handset to this low a price point involves making several compromises, but these aren’t all that evident from a first glance at the handset. Smaller than the iPhone, the E110 is more similar in terms of size and shape to the Samsung Genio Touch. Despite the low price tag the phone is actually quite attractive to look at. There’s a neat row of touch buttons parked directly under the screen and a stylish circular D-pad sits at the bottom of the handset flanked by the two clickable call buttons.
The handset also feels quite well built and doesn’t creak and flex like some lesser budget models. Only the slightly cheap looking metallic band that runs around the edge of the phone spoils the otherwise upmarket feel. Also, unlike the E101, this model thankfully has a standard headphone jack at the top and there’s a microUSB port on the righthand edge that’s used for both charging and syncing the handset. We also like the fact that the side mounted microSD card slot is easily accessible, as many low end phones hide it away under the battery cover.

However, as soon as you turn on the phone some of the compromises become glaringly obvious. The first is the 2.8-inch screen. Not only is it small, but it’s also got a very low resolution of just 240 x 320 pixels. As a result text and icons look nowhere near as sharp as they do on even midrange Android handsets. It also makes the onscreen keyboard quite tricky to use as the keys are so small. You really have to type quite slowly to make sure that you’re not accidentally tapping an adjacent letter to the one you want. However, to be fair we have to say that even though the screen uses resistive rather than capacitive technology, it’s actually very responsive to finger presses and swipes.

It’s not just the screen that’s been a victim of the cut backs, as the phone’s connectivity has suffered too due to Acer’s decision not to add Wi-Fi support. We’ve seen this before on budget handsets and Acer did the same thing on the older E101 model, but to us it feels like a compromise too far as it means you’re totally reliant on the 3G network for browsing the web or picking up email. This can be a major issue if you don’t get good 3G reception in your home or office. It’s a shame too because the phone has pretty much all the other connectivity bases covered as along with the HSDPA support, there’s also Bluetooth and even GPS.

Acer launched four Windows Mobile devices a few months back, but hasn’t trumpeted them much since. These devices follow Acer’s purchase of mobile-device specialist E-TEN. It seems that Acer is waiting to broadcast its entry into the smart phone market until its Windows Mobile 6.5-based devices start to appear towards the end of this year.
Acer may be missing a trick by keeping quiet about the Tempo DX900 though. It brings something unique to the UK: a Windows Mobile device that supports two SIM cards. It’s available SIM-free (ironically) for around £400.

Design
The DX900 is a squat little smart phone, measuring 61 by 106 by 17mm. It’s comfortable to hold and not too large for the pocket. It weighs 147g, which makes it heavier than your average Windows Mobile device, but not overly so.

The design is unremarkable. The shell is made from black plastic with a rubbery finish everywhere bar the screen surround, which is shiny. Shiny silver-coloured buttons sit beneath the screen. There are call and end buttons and, between them, a large navigation pad. All of the buttons are bordered by a white light when pressed — a useful touch in low light or at night.

There’s an array of slots and connectors around the edges of the DX900. On the left is a 2.5mm headset jack. Above this is a button that, with a long press, activates voice recording, and, with a short press, starts the voice-command software. Above this is a pair of volume rockers. The right edge has the main on/off switch, a microSD card slot and a camera button.

The sharp, bright touchscreen measures 71mm (2.8 inches) across the diagonal and has a native VGA resolution of 480×640 pixels. Windows Mobile 6.1 is not particularly finger-friendly though, and you’ll need to use the stylus for a good deal of activity. This lives in a housing on the back right bottom edge. The stylus is telescopic, extending to 90mm as you extract it from its slot, and extremely light.

The DX900 ships with a mains power charger, a USB PC cable, a stereo headset, a screen protector, a spare stylus, a protective pouch, a printed quick-start guide and two CDs. One of these contains the user manual, while the other contains Windows Mobile’s PC synchronisation software.

Features
The DX900 runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. It comes with 256MB of ROM and 128MB of RAM. These are not generous specifications by current standards, and a fair amount of the storage memory can be used up by preinstalled extras (more on that later).

The DX900 has a 533MHz Samsung SC3 6400 processor. Responsiveness is good, but not great. This is a 3G device with HSDPA support, and it includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There’s a GPS receiver built in, a front-facing camera for two-way video calling and a 3-megapixel main camera with LED flash and self-portrait mirror. The device supports TV out, but no cables are provided for this.

There is an accelerometer that you can enable if you are happy for the device to switch screen orientation as you turn it in your hand. This can be useful for things like Web browsing and photo viewing, which benefit from a wide-screen orientation. You can configure the DX900 with an exceptions list, telling it not to switch orientation when certain applications are running.

The most significant feature of the DX900 is its support for two SIMs, both of which are located beneath the battery.

Like a automaton newly risen from the critical, the Acer Tempo X960 has a pretty stale whiff a propos it. It’s not an revolting phone, but its Windows mobile phone 6.1 operating arrangement is clumsily wrapped in the dated-looking Acer Shell skin, and it has the usability problems of a ten-year-old PDA.Also like a automaton, the X960 is slow-moving and relentless, wearing you down with acute usability problems and a lacklustre touchscreen. It’s got a quantity of excellent connectivity, with HSDPA and Wi-Fi, but it’s up critical of stiff competition in the touchscreen handset bazaar, and Acer needs to step up its game.

The X960 is open instead of around £360 SIM-free.

Abandoned in the Acer agency
Remember Microsoft dip? Released in 1995, this user interface covered Windows with a picture of a sitting scope, aiming to knock together your PC more user-friendly. You can not remember dip, as it was a debacle to custom and solitary of Redmond’s biggest flops eternally. We wonder, therefore, why Acer absolute to recompense duty to dip by wrapping Windows mobile phone in the Acer Shell UI, which presents homescreen icons as if they’re sitting in a ghostly, greyish agency.

The goal is to knock together Windows mobile phone more finger-friendly, since it’s disgracefully easier said than done to custom lacking a stylus. The conclusion has the gain of on condition that superior areas to trace, but it’s revolting and dated-looking, and doesn’t expose the phone’s many skin tone.
The Acer Shell UI does devote you the gain of three homescreens, which you can conversion by swiping a finger sideways across the screen. A vertical make off with hides the agency setting in favour of an iPhone-style menu with rounded icons and two homescreens. This is a important expansion greater than the default agency set-up, but the similar-looking icons don’t help you recover could you repeat that? You’re looking instead of.

Once you journey sour the Acer Shell reservation, usability gets even worse, merit to Windows mobile phone 6.1′s tiny, fiddly icons. Even Microsoft knows with the purpose of Windows mobile phone 6.1 isn’t fit instead of the brave extra finger-touch earth, somewhere styluses gain veto place, and Windows mobile phone 6.5 is frightening on the horizon. But the X960 does include a stylus, and you’ll need it — the soft Qwerty upright is so tiny, it really made us laugh. Although in attendance are masses of other input options, such as script recognition, this phone won’t be kind to frequent texters or emailers.

We found other usability failures with the purpose of seemed to frustrate us next to all curve. For illustration, from the homescreen it takes four taps — four — to unfasten a extra text message, and the majority of individuals concern navigating through a tiny Windows menu with your fingernail, which takes intense concentration and a steady laborer. On the plus feature, this will keep you from carriage not in drunken texts to your exes, but, on the minus feature, it’s incredibly irritating.

At the same time as well as a five-way navigation button, in attendance are call, hang-up, maps and homeland buttons, but we didn’t recover them much help in navigating around Window mobile phone 6.1′s menus. And, in a quantity of applications, such as the camera, they didn’t prepare something — the homeland button didn’t even return us to the homescreen.

When Acer absolute to break into the smart-phone bazaar, it chose to fall for up the Glofiish brand as an alternative of opening from graze. The Tempo M900 is the most recent conclusion of this joint venture. Priced next to a propos £370 SIM-free, has this keyboard-equipped Windows mobile phone handset got could you repeat that? It takes to challenge the likes of the HTC Touch Pro2
The foremost obsession you notice what time you take the M900 not in of the box is its sheer stress and bulk. Hiding a slide-out Qwerty upright in its frame, it was not at all open to be the sleekest smart phone on the bazaar, but it feels considerably superior and heavier than other keyboard-toting handsets, like the Touch Pro2 or Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. The phone’s pretty old-fashioned styling does little to mask its chunkiness, and the build quality isn’t brilliant either — the plasticky defense tends to contract pretty more than it be supposed to.

Large keys
That held, next to slightest the bonus cosmos capital Acer has been able to equip the M900 with a voluminous upright. The keys on the upright are packed pretty tightly collected, but they’re vaguely superior than usual and quite reactive, so, similar to a quantity of practice, you’ll recover it relatively unproblematic to tap not in long emails and text messages.
The M900′s screen is too very impressive. Measuring 97mm (3.8 inches) diagonally, it’s solitary of the main displays on several Windows mobile phone device, and its extreme, 800×480-pixel decision is especially constructive what time viewing Web pages or design credentials in the phone’s Office mobile phone suite of applications, as it capital you don’t gain to prepare as much scrolling back and forth as on other campaign.

Beneath the huge parade, you’ll recover the handset’s other answer article: Its fingerprint scanner. This can be configured either to design as a security device — so with the purpose of you need to make off with your finger across it to achieve access to the phone — or truthful to safeguard creature folders or the data in confident applications, such as your calendar and contacts manuscript. You can too custom it as a trace controller to move through menus and choose on-screen icons.

Interface tweaks
The phone runs Windows mobile phone 6.1, which has probably the most horrible user interface of several of the current smart-phone operating systems. Recognising this, Acer has added its own Shell interface enhancements greater than the top. Shell presents you with a virtual desktop, with various items share out around it. Selecting these items with your finger takes you to the associated applications. The arrangement factory convincingly well, but the graphics look pretty dingy and it’s take away sly and intuitive than the TouchFlo interface with the purpose of HTC uses on its smart phones.

The M900 is built around the same rapid, 522MHz Samsung notebook used on the other smart phones in Acer’s range, but it barely has 128MB of RAM. It runs smoothly what time you’ve got solitary or two apps unfasten, but it starts to struggle with several more than with the purpose of, due to the lack of RAM. Battery life isn’t too searing either. You’ll barely grasp around a day’s procedure from the M900 previously it needs recharging.

The M900 isn’t too bad on the connectivity front, though. It wires both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and you too grasp HSDPA instead of rapid Web browsing what time you’re on the move. The on-board GPS is too top-class, proving very quick to grasp a lock on your location. The 5-megapixel camera has an LED flicker and autofocus, and takes decent-enough shots, provided the lighting conditions aren’t too poor.

Acer is acknowledged pro building low-cost laptops with the purpose of offer delightful help pro money. Now with the purpose of the company has in progress manufacturing smart phones, it’s irritating the same trick. Its most recent handset, the beTouch E101, can be singled out up pro as regards £170 SIM-free, which is mean by smart-phone principles, but has Acer compromised on performance to reach the low asking outlay?

Cheap but well-built
The E101 is the cheapest genre in Acer’s in mint condition line-up of Windows cell phone 6.5 handsets. It’s complex to tell with the purpose of from the folder, though, as it feels relatively solid in the offer and looks quite stylish too, despite being made of plastic. Perhaps the nearly all exciting part of the design is the touch-sensitive sweep with the purpose of sits on the underneath of the show off. When you run your thumb around it in a circular wave, it acts as a virtual scroll sweep, allowing you to quickly move up and down through long lists. It’s too clickable, so it plant like a standard direction pad, too.

The E101 is built around a Qualcomm MSM7225 notebook with the purpose of ticks done on 528MHz. This is like to the notebook used in nearly all of HTC’s smart phones. Here it’s helped along by 256MB of RAM and 512MB of ROM. If you need more storeroom pause, you can add it via the microSD certificate slot on the top right-hand circumference of the phone.

No comrade to fingers
Compared to Windows cell phone 6.1, Windows cell phone 6.5 skin a much-improved interface. But, although it’s been redesigned to be much more finger-friendly, in attendance are still a a small amount of too many fiddly menus and buttons lurking around pro our liking. Acer has added its own ‘today’ screen with the purpose of provides shortcuts to commonly used applications, but it’s laid-back to meander rotten if you’d fancy to exercise the standard Windows cell phone version.

Unfortunately, the handset’s resistive touchscreen is individual of the most horrible we’ve seen on a Windows cell phone handset in quite around spell. Not barely has it got a relatively low answer of 240×400 pixels, but colours look dark and lackluster, and a grid configure is with no trouble visible amid the pixels. Furthermore, it seems to come up with a very lengthy response rate, as, at what time you scroll up and down quickly in the ‘start’ menu, you can envision ghosting around the icons as they move.

No 3G or Wi-Fi
We might truthful as regards live with the poor screen if it weren’t pro the phone’s lack of both 3G and Wi-Fi support. This resources you come up with to rely on a slower Edge or GPRS exchange ideas connection at what time you feel like to browse the Web or pick up email. Consequently, Web pages take ages to show off. Acer has incorporated a total of social-networking apps, as well as around pro Facebook, YouTube and Flickr, but the YouTube app isn’t very helpful, as there’s simply not a sufficient amount bandwidth on hand on Edge networks to act back videos exclusive of constant buffering. Not a single tape we tried played smoothly.

The camera isn’t much to correspond with home-made as regards either. It’s barely a 2-megapixel snapper, so the limit answer of the shots it can capture is 1,600×1,200 pixels, and it lacks a twinkle and autofocus. Also, while the phone has on-board GPS, it was lengthy to get a sufficient amount satellites to search out an original lock on our posture.

On the plus plane, the phone’s call quality is pretty delightful. Here piece of information, it’s even better than with the purpose of of Acer’s much more expensive neoTouch S200. Battery life isn’t bad either — we got around 2 days of standard exercise not at home of it.

Conclusion
We’re not convinced the Acer beTouch E101 represents delightful help pro money, even though it’s mean. Here an effort to keep the outlay as low as potential, Acer has trimmed back the phone’s specification too radically. If you’re looking pro a resources smart phone, our advice would be to look elsewhere.
