HTC hit the prime time with its original HTC Desire. This Android-powered device, more or less single-handedly, put the Taiwanese manufacturer on the map, cementing its reputation is the only real alternative to Apple’s iPhone.
Next up in the Desire range was the HTC Desire HD and HTC Desire Z. Both devices were a massive departure from the form and style of the original Desire handset, featuring a massive 4.3-inch display and slide-out Qwerty keyboard respectively.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t just the style that differed – the performance wasn’t as good either. The Desire HD, for example, has an abysmal battery life. So much so, in fact, that you have to carry a charger with you at all times. Then there’s the grossly under-clocked processor on the Desire Z, which makes the device sluggish after prolonged use.
In short, neither device lived up to the reputation – i.e. reliability, usability and battery life – of the original HTC Desire.
Now it’s the turn of the HTC Desire S, complete with Android 2.3 and a new unibody chassis. It looks a lot more like the original HTC Desire than the Desire HD and Desire Z, but does it match its performance? We find out.
Although being quite similar in form to the original Desire, the Desire S is in actual fact quite a bit smaller measuring in at 115×59.8×11.63mm vs 119x60x11.9mm. It’s also 5g lighter at 130g in weight as well.
So, in this respect the ‘S’ could stand for svelte, slimmed down or smaller. Either one would fit the bill to be honest, the device is smaller, more compact and will suit users that find larger 4-inch display-toting devices a bit too much.
Having said that, we can’t help but feel a little let down by the handset itself. Don’t get us wrong, it’s a decent smartphone – it just kind of reminds us of, well, the HTC Wildfire.
Now, we’re not saying this is necessarily a bad thing, but the HTC Wildfire is not a premium handset – it’s a budget smartphone. But the mid-range similarities don’t stop here.

The spec on the HTC Desire S is also pretty standard fare as well by 2011’s current standards – there’s no dual core processor for instance. It’s not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s not exactly much of a progression forwards from HTC’s 2010 offerings.

HTC has upped the processing power slightly though with the inclusion of a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 and an improved Adreno 205 graphics processor, which ensures super slick animations and gameplay.

“I own an HTC Wildfire S and all I can tell you is this phone is just awesome! In this post you will find the HTC Wildfire S review, HTC Wildfire S price and also the HTC Wildfire S specifications (specs).
HTC Wildfire S is the next version of the original Wildfire which stormed the market last year and captured the heart of millions of people. HTC has made every effort to keep the same kind of feel and also add more to it, so that we consumers are very happy (I am!).
Before buying it I did a vast research and everything pointed out in the positive direction. HTC Wildfire S can never be as great as Desire S or any other higher models from HTC. But it’s a great bargain for money and you really won’t find it that cheap when you hold it in your hand or use it perhaps. The camera, call quality, User interface, surprise options, connectivity are some of the things that you will take it for granted with the Wildfire S….
The only drawback that I would consider is the battery backup but then I mess around a lot with my phone installing games and apps all the time. So I guess it is not that of a concern but in the next Android update lets hope Google pulls in everything for good in terms of battery consumption.”

Also check out Nokia E7, which is a cool mobile phone as well!
The whole design of HTC’s ChaCha revolves around the social network. There’s a QWERTY keypad to help you type status updates and send messages, the number keys are picked out in Facebook blue and there’s a little blue ‘f’ button on the phone’s chin, which unlocks a number of Facebook-specific functions.

Some specs:

Android 2.3 Gingerbread

800Mhz Processor

512MB RAM

Front Facing Camera (WiFi Video Calls)

5 Megapixel Camera

HSDPA 7.2mb/s

Bluetooth 3.0

802.11 B/G/N WiFi

GPS

Hardware Specifications

The ChaCha makes no bones about being underpowered, indeed, it’s one of its main selling points. Not the fact of being underpowered itself, but the rather pocket friendly 114.4 x 64.6 x 10.7 mm dimensions slightly less beefier processing power affords it.

The only slight issue could be the 512 MB of RAM. Other phone limitations will probably constrain the phone from needing much more, but 768 MB wouldn’t have broken the bank.

Standard A-GPS and HSDPA put in an appearance, coupled with Bluetooth 3.0 and that’s about all the fancy on-board tech this sort of teenage-centric phone requires.
Design, Display

The design is one of those love/hate things, you’re definitely going to be taking or leaving it, but most decidedly not both. And while you’d think the classic mobile phone mainstays of white, grey and silver shouldn’t draw too much attention since every other phone is one of or a combination of those colours, it still manages to draw faintly bemused stares on the Tube, although we admit that could easily have been the chin.

The display isn’t that tiny in itself at 2.6 inches, but compared to modern smartphones it is noticeably Lilliputian, to the extent where it was a bit of a shock to see a functioning touchscreen that size. A resolution of 480 x 320 pixels means a portion of the Android Market will be closed to you, but the processor would likely have objected to apps involving heavy lifting in any case.

If you’re worried about how HTC managed to fit the usually expansive and graphically intensive Sense on such a tiny, pokey device, don’t be. Interface tweaks abound and most graphical flourishes have been removed, making the ChaCha seem a lot speedier than it actually is, but still maintaining the Sense functionality, albeit in a smaller package.

CPU and Camera

The keyboard is nothing short of excellent, with delightfully clicky keys and an airy layout that you can confidently tap away at your heart’s content. Our review unit had two wonky keys though, so you’d better give your handset a good once-over when it arrives, but who uses “n” and “m” in words nowadays anyway?
Processor and Camera

The processor raised a few eyebrows when news of the little fellow started doing the rounds, specifically the then-announced 600 MHz clock speed. HTC quickly caught on that in the 1.2 Ghz dual core smartphone era this would not do, so it promptly squeezed 200 of those self-same MHz more, up to a now almost respectable 800 MHz.

With no Flash or access to resource-draining apps, the processor is likely more than enough for this phone’s target demographic and might have been even stuck at 600 MHz.

The camera is exactly what you’d expect, putting in solid performance for a 5MP shooter but not suitable for anything more ambitious than, fittingly, a Facebook photo. Video isn’t quite 720p, but again, the 640×480 capture will make short work of any barbecue with aplomb. Lest we forget, there’s also a VGA camera in the front, for what it’s worth.

Battery Life

The reason why HTC could afford to bump the processor speed, as well as the reason for what in a chinless device would have been a fairly slim profile quickly becomes apparent when examining battery life. Despite its diminutive dimensions, there can easily be two days of moderate to heavy use nestled in there and the handset is definitely near the upper limit in terms of battery life when it comes to Android devices period.

It was the first touchscreen equipped BlackBerry, and it promised to deliver all of the finger-friendly usefulness that other platforms were offering. The problem was that its touch experience was too different, and the software that was loaded on the phone was horribly unstable. Sure, it got better through a few (too few?) updates, but it was still a polarizing device.

Now we have the Storm2 9550. It is 95% the same hardware as the original, but that 5% of difference, tied with the new BlackBerry OS 5.0 that is both stable and useful, gives the Storm2 a big edge over its elder sibling.

At 14mm deep, HTC Desire Z is a chunky handset, compared to the Desire HD’s 11.8mm, although comparative to the 13.7mm of Motorola’s excellent Milestone 2, which also has a pull-out QWERTY. Weighing 180g, it’s quite heavy, but is still slim enough to fit into a pocket.
The screen is surrounded by a aluminium trim, matched by an aluminium battery cover, elsewhere there’s a darker grey, rubberized coating on the handset. It feels solid and well built, but again lacks the wow factor of the HTC Legend.
In common with other Android handsets, you get Home, Menu, Back and Search touch controls along the bottom of the screen, although the strip the controls are on is a little too slim if you’ve got large fingers. There’s also a square touch pad, which functions a bit like a joypad; move your finger left and right to scroll through the homescreens, it works in both orientations, although there’s quite a distinct movement to master. Elsewhere there’s a 3.5mm jack, microSD port and a microSD slot alongside 1.5GB storage.
However good virtual keyboards have become – and HTC has developed some of the best we’ve seen on smartphones – for many people a solid keyboard is essential, especially if you type lots of text messages and emails.
The keyboard slides out vertically using a unique ‘Z’ hinge, referring to the shape of the hinge used between the keyboard and the top section with the screen. After initially trying out the hinge in September we were a little worried about its durability, but over the days we’ve been using it, it feels strong, although we’d still treat it with care. There’s little danger of the screen accidentally sliding open like with some smartphones.

Spread over four lines, the QWERTY has dedicated full stop and comma buttons easily reached using your thumbs, while numbers are accessed by holding the FN key down. Keys are small, but with ample space between each one, while the soft rubber coating ensures comfort even for long emails. Two shortcut keys located on the bottom right can be used to assign Apps and Shortcuts.

HTC Desire Z: Interface

Like the Desire HD, the Desire Z is equipped with HTC Sense. Customise five homescreens with apps and widgets, which you can organise into folders.
HTC Sense syncs social networking accounts like Flickr, Facebook and Twitter accounts, while Favourite contacts are now displayed alongside status updates. As well as syncing your contacts with each account and your phonebook, it automatically links connections, although on occasion you’ll need to do this manually.
The new Notification bar is a welcome addition, letting you quickly swap between icons of previous applications, alongside connection information, new messages and email.Running an 800Mhz processor, the Desire Z never feels slow, although flicking through homescreens it’s perhaps not as quick as the Desire HD, but this is a very minor gripe.

HTC Desire Z: Screen and browser

The 3.7-inch screen has a resolution of 480×800, the same as the Desire and Desire HD, although it’s bright and text is sharp and a cut above most handsets, it doesn’t come close to the dazzling whites and deep blacks you’d get with the Apple iPhone 4 or AMOLED Samsung Galaxy S. Web pages in particular have a yellowish tint that you only notice when you put the Desire Z next to an iPhone. However, this is probably a harsh comparison, because so few phones have Retina displays or AMOLED screens.

Although not as generous as the Desire HD’s screen, it’s still a good size for video. HD clips look fantastic, as sharp and detailed as you’d expect. You Tube fares less well, it’s a little soft, but fine for casual use. Support for Flash 10.1 lets you playback a host of videos, including those on T3.com Elsewhere, when browsing pinch to zoom works very well and text re-wraps exceptionally quickly.

HTC Desire Z: Camera and video

The Desire Z is equipped with a 5-megapixel camera, which despite having less pixels than the Desire HD’s 8-megapixels, will comfortably produce 13×10-inch prints
Photo enthusiasts will appreciate a solid shutter, alongside a virtual one. Autofocus is quick (and you can tap to focus) but there’s slight lag between depressing the shutter and the photo being taken, it’s not terrible by any means, but certainly not fantastic for fast-moving action.
Photos are fine, without being fantastic. Colors are bright, detail is sharp, especially close-ups, you can make tweaks to the sharpness, contrast, exposure and saturation. Like the Desire HD we found Auto white balance produces the most accurate results, Daylight looks unnatural. Be careful using the ISO settings, noise is really visible around ISO 400 and ISO 800 is practically unusable. The single – instead of dual – flash is surprisingly powerful, so the Desire Z will easily illuminate a small room.

HTC did not skimp out on the materials when developing the Panache. The device features an aluminum back plate, a chrome trim along the front panel, and rubberized edges around the entire phone. Weighing in at 168 grams, the Panache is considerably heavier than the Nexus S for instance, which weighs a reasonable 129 grams. The solid body and metal backing brings a slight heft to the device, but in a positive way. The weight does not create unneeded fatigue but brings a sense of ruggedness and the feeling that it won’t crack on impact.

The rear of the Panache bears a 5 MP camera (2592 x 1944 pixels) with a led flash, and is capable of shooting 720p video. The speaker is also located next to the camera. Most current generation phones feature their speakers on the back of the device, but this may be counterproductive because when most users play music the rear of the device is blocked by the surface they’re placed on. A more suitable placement of the speaker would be on the top or the sides of the device as seen on both Blackberry and Nokia devices.

On the top, we find a 3.5mm headphone jack and the power/sleep button. One minor aesthetic issue found was the placement of the power/sleep button. The placing of the button on the top left, instead of the more traditional top right or on the side creates for a quite strenuous motion. The left side of the device bears the micro-USB port for charging and allows for pc connectivity, while on the right we find a dedicated 2-level camera shutter button which is always appreciated.

On the front of the phone we find the 480 x 800 pixels, 3.8 inch TFT display, a front facing VGA camera, and 4 navigation buttons commonly found on most Android devices. The physical buttons provide tactile feedback that some customers might appreciate and can alleviate the problem of our pesky fingers clicking the wrong buttons. HTC has thrown in a optical trackpad into the mix, adding an alternative navigation method. Users may find the trackpad either a nuisance or a blessing depending on their preference. While the trackpad would be used for more delicate procedures such as selecting text or navigating through links on websites, it will be inadequate for navigating the menus in comparison to the ease of navigating with the touch screen.

Under the hood the Panache sports a second-generation 1GHZ Snapdragon processor with 768MB of RAM with Bluetooth 2.1 and GPS built-in. Despite the introduction of dual-core phones on the market, the combination of the Panache’s processor and ample amounts of RAM allows for the device to run smoothly, even on flash intensive web pages. The GPS on the device worked flawlessly through our many tests. An interesting fact about the GPS is that it locked-on in less than 10 seconds from cold boot. As a bonus the inclusion of the compass allows for surprisingly accurate results that compliments Google Navigation seamlessly. The Quadrant benchmark scored the Panache just above the Nexus One, with a score of 1601 (highest score achieved).

Battery Life:

The Panache is equipped with a 1400 mAH battery that lasts roughly the whole day with moderate amounts of use. Keep in mind that a user who is consistently using data intensive applications, having the brightness settings at maximum, and running CPU intensive applications (like games) will have different usage times.
Reception:

In the various areas that we’ve visited; from low signal area’s and dead spots, to positive full signal sites, the Panache performed similarly to the Nexus S but fell short against the Nokia 5230. It can be said that the Panache is line with most current generation devices in terms of reception. On full signal, the Panache was able to pull roughly 2Mb down and 1Mb up at various times of the day. While this may highlight the strength of the Mobilicity network, the speeds represent the phone’s consistency to maximize any available bandwidth.

Camera:

The device features a 5MP rear facing camera with LED flash allowing for video recording of up to 720P HD quality. The camera takes still shots relatively well in a well-lit environment but does suffer from some noise within the picture. The LED flash does effectively light up the scene and allows the camera to take respectable photos in darker settings. The 720P video, while a nice feature, shares a similar fate with regards to the photos. The video retains the natural colours of the landscape but is plagued with the same noise that is found in the photos which will make a relatively nice video look slightly washed out. The camera is sufficient for quick shots and videos but do not expect the camera to replace any existing point and shoot. What we did like is the extensive customization options available on the device; including unique effects such as distortion, negatives, and image adjustment settings (includes exposure, contrast, and saturation). While shooting videos, HTC has added the feature of zooming in and out during recording and this should definitely be integrated in all devices to come. The camera can be focused by pressing on the screen or holding down the dedicated camera button and can even be done while shooting videos.

Display:

The display on the Panache does not make any technological breakthroughs in image quality, but is in line with what is currently found on the market. The display seems too bright and causes images to look washed out when compared to other devices. For the average user the display works great and unless scrutinized will not be noticeable. When compared to the Nexus S and Galaxy S Fascinate 4G the difference is clear, where we see much deeper blacks and more vibrant colours found on the Super AMOLED displays.

Software:

The HTC Panache features Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread with HTC’s Sense UI 2.1 overlay. The Sense UI does an admirable job of expanding the experience provided by the solid Android Gingerbread base. The UI helps users differentiate and customize their “Scenes”, which are pre-configured appearances of the Android home screens depending on the specific “Sense” chosen. In addition, HTC offers a gracious amount of widgets ranging from different styles of clocks to a number of social networking applications. The Sense UI in a larger aspect is a great tool to bring all the content from various sources into one easy to use location. A feature we could have gone without was the alternate applications drawer. The drawer found on stock Android provides a simplified view for such a medial task as viewing all available apps. One of the greatest features HTC has added to the Panache is the ability to FastBoot into the Android OS. When FastBoot is enabled the device can start-up in roughly 4 seconds, an impressive feat for any device and is leaps and bounds beyond load times found on other devices.
