Right, time for something new from the world of Android phones. We’ve seen, in recent times, a ’superphone’ (the Nexus One), and ‘even-better-than-the-superphone-phone’ (the HTC Desire), and a ‘potentially-a-superphone’ (the Sony Ericsson X10). There’s a definite trend towards the high end in the Android ecosystem, but high-enders aren’t the only Android phones on the market.

According to Unwired, there’s a new Android beastie, which aims not to be the biggest and most powerful phone out there, but instead, is the smallest Android phone on the market (or so they say… more on that in a minute).

It’s called the Vodafone 845, and as you’d expect, it seems to be aiming more for the budget/mid-range market, with a 2.8 inch touchscreen, a 3MP camera (allegedly) and not much else of note except the fact it runs Android 2.1.It’s actually made by Huawei, and as I said, they’ve gone for a small size over a long list of features. But is it, as they say, the smallest Android phone on the market?

Well, we can actually work it out, since the dimensions are posted online. It’s supposed to measure 100 x 55 x 13mm, which means is volume comes out at 71,500mm3. There is a competitor for smallest Android phone out there, though, and it even has ‘mini’ in the name, s that should be a hint. Yup, it’s the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini, but which one is actually smaller?

Well, as I said, the Vodafone 845 measures 100 x 55 x 13mm, but the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini comes in at 83 x 50 x 16mm. And that means that its volume is 66,400mm3. Ergo, the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini is actually the smallest Android phone out there, even though it’s an Android phone that still hasn’t officially gone on sale yet. So, yes, despite it also not running Android 2.1 (but it might in future, while the Vodafone 845 runs it now), the X10 Mini is the smaller phone. I have to be honest, I reckon it’s the nicer of the two phones, too. The camera’s better (coming in at 5MP), and, in my opinion at least, it looks prettier.

If you’re wanting a teeny tiny Android phone, then, I say your best bet is to go for the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini. ‘Tis much nicer.

Own-brand handsets have a tendency to be the black sheep of the mobile-phone earth — no-one wants to take the standing intended for producing them, while ability users might be lay rotten by their unsolved parentage. The Vodafone 830 does come up with roughly quirks, but its combination of a helpful range of skin and a low consequences tag might induce you to dip your toes into the own-brand waters.

The 830 is uninhibited with Vodafone on a £15 monthly contract, and around £70 on a pay-as-you-go deal.

The light and the dark
The 830 is a bargain phone, and it feels like individual. The plastic folder feels flimsy, especially on the back, and the slider on our sample wobbled somewhat at what time it was unguarded. A substantially sized handset, the 830 too has the unexpected grace of a mean DVD player, on barely 90g. But, with sober dark-grey looks and a pseudo-brushed-metal cessation on the buttons, its arrival is nothing to be ashamed of, and it wouldn’t look prohibited of place in the presence of Nokia slider phones like the N81.

The 830 looks decent sufficient, but feels quite flimsy, especially at what time slid unguarded

The 3.2-megapixel camera is covered at what time the phone is bunged, which is helpful intended for shielding the lens, but it method with the purpose of you come up with to take photos with the phone unguarded. We found with the purpose of takes roughly getting used to. Worse is with the purpose of the volume button, which too zooms the camera, is opposite the cover up button, so we now and then activated the zoom by accident with our thumb while spellbinding the phone to press the cover up.

The results from the camera are acceptable intended for quick snapshots, with positive colours and helpful white balance. Typical hand-held shots in rainy-day lighting are helpful sufficient intended for emailing or rearrangement on Facebook. But we found our photos tended to be blurry around the edges save we held the handset stock-still, and, not including a twinkle or an LED photo light, our snaps in low light were blurry and noisy. The 830 too takes tape, but the steadfastness is so low with the purpose of it’s hardly worth it, save you run into the Loch Ness Monster and you’re desperate to information it.

The 830′s 61mm (2.4-inch) screen is positive and reimbursement from see-through anti-aliased text. Text looks especially helpful in the Web browser.

The five-way navigation register can be automatic with shortcuts, but the homescreen doesn’t show off whichever

The 830 has HSDPA intended for sooner surfing, and we found downloading to be snappy. The browser is functional but basic. For paradigm, it can barely zoom to a handful of predetermined levels, and you come up with to navigate through a join of menu options to induce them. We too occasionally found the browser unresponsive while a send a message was loading, even at what time we tried to cease the process.

The browser, and the leftovers of the user interface, will be familiar if you’re affecting from a Sony Ericsson or Samsung phone, with the 830′s menus and prognostic text akin to the offerings of both brands. Along with a five-way navigation register and six function keys, the innocuous user interface makes the 830 feel cool to benefit from correctly prohibited of the box.
We uncovered a hardly any hiccups in the handset’s software, though. For paradigm, if we strike the cancel register while typing a text message, the phone now and then packed up and restarted necessarily — but on slightest it saved a write of the message.

The five-way navigation register can be automatic with four shortcuts, but in attendance aren’t whichever shortcuts on the domicile screen, so details like impending calendar proceedings come up with to stay hidden until you unguarded the significant diligence.

Tunes on tap
The 830 has an MP3 player with the purpose of runs in the background, so you can benefit from the phone intended for other tasks while listening to tunes. A mini player on the domicile screen shows what’s singing, but it can’t be controlled with whichever of the keys, which we would come up with liked. There’s a function register with the purpose of takes you correctly into the media player, though, so it’s cool to induce to.

Our tunes sounded pretty monotonous due to the 830′s flimsy incorporated earphones, and, as of the 830′s proprietary headset socket, we couldn’t try it prohibited with whichever decent headphones. The media player has an equaliser with the purpose of significantly tweaks the sound intended for numerous genres of harmony. But, not including helpful headphones, it’s barely worth using to admire the graphic equaliser become up and down in the media player.

Transferring harmony on top of the handset via USB is cool, merit to Vodafone’s basic but usable syncing software. We loved how the software installed itself on our desktop straight from the phone, not including requiring a download or a recording. After a hideous installer straight prohibited of 1995, we were pleasantly surprised to uncover the sync software is modern-looking and cool to benefit from. It lacks progressive skin, such as converting harmony and tape documentation on the take flight, but dragging and dropping photos and MP3s on and rotten the handset is austere. Unfortunately, Mac users are absent prohibited in the cold yet again — barely Windows XP is supported.

Conclusion
The Vodafone 830 is an inexpensive phone with the purpose of offers a decent 3.2-megapixel camera, a handy MP3 player, immediate HSDPA and a significant screen, all wrapped up in an unobjectionable design with the purpose of won’t embarrass somebody. But its flimsy plastic body, lack of camera twinkle, and special crash bugs are disappointing.

At the flash, intended for the same £15-per-month contract consequences with Vodafone, you can pick up a branded slider like the Sony Ericsson W595 sound system, which too has HSDPA and a 3.2-megapixel camera, as well as a hardly any spare bells and whistles, like quad-band support, an incorporated 2GB recollection certificate and an FM means of communication. The W595 is getting long in the tooth, so it’s roughly discounted from its primary SIM-free consequences, and we think you’ll induce more phone intended for your money.

But, if you’re looking to stick with a pay-as-you become deal, the 830′s £70 consequences tag makes it a helpful option intended for a resources phone with the purpose of packs a helpful selection of skin.

The 810 is a winner in expressions of form, recognition to its insincere slider instrument and glossy veneer. Its camera is below-par, however, and its browser is pretty imperfect. There are stacks of plan handsets existing by the side of this worth meaning and unfortunately the 810 doesn’t really offer no matter which special to turn into it remain motionless not worth it from the crowd.

The 810 looks logically stylish, but it doesn’t allow the skin texture to turn into it an outstanding plan phone. While T-Mobile, Orange and O2 have a propensity to turn into a large deal of their own branded handsets, Vodafone prefers to slip them in under the radar. The 810 has at home with little big deal, yet it boasts a decent spec and a slick-looking design. But does its low asking worth of precisely £45 on recompense as you set out turn into this phone a hidden gem or an embarrassment that’s superlative kept back not worth it of the publicity? At at the outset glance you possibly will confuse the 810 in support of one digit of handsets from copious manufacturers such as Samsung and LG. This is primarily as it’s got a related glossy outdoor and sliding design to individuals found on many of the phones from individuals two brands. But the handset is not precisely good-looking, it’s plus relatively small, measuring precisely 98mm tall and 48mm eclectic. And since as it tips the scales by the side of a shade greater than 100g it won’t exactly weigh you down whilst you decline it into your reduced-size.

The sliding instrument feels pretty durable whilst you flick it friendly and the keypad beating underneath is a decent size, with nicely spaced keys so as to are comfortable to service in support of texting. The menu order is based on the standard Vodafone theme, so it’s instantly familiar and navigating it via the big direction pad under the screen is a gird. The placement of the navigation pad and buttons, however, does mean so as to you allow to be chary not to accidentally gain them whilst you’re sliding the phone friendly and stopped.

The phone wires 3G in support of closer download speeds of composition and themes, and nearby are cameras on the front and rear so it can be used in support of cartridge calling. Budget handsets normally don’t achieve so well in expressions of battery life, but the 810 manages to act a decent job. You’ll progress greater than 3 hours of jargon instant from it and it’ll keep running in support of around 12 days on backup.

The 810 simply sports a 2-megapixel camera so the shots it takes are relatively low-res. But even compass reading the quality of the sensor in mind, pictures have a propensity to look more willingly washed-out, as colours aren’t rendered as vibrantly as they be supposed to be. It plus lacks a sparkle, so it’s pretty much useless in support of taking snaps in low light settings such as pubs and clubs.

The phone’s Web browser is plus disappointing. It’s quite fiddly to service and lacks unexceptional skin texture at the moment found on the browsers on other mobiles, such as the aptitude to zoom in on pages. The upshot is so as to you’re simply likely to service it whilst you’re really desperate to check something on the Web.
